Barnes Home Improvements, since 1996, Wooster, OH

Tub out. Shower in. Days, not weeks.

Tub-to-shower conversion · Wooster, Ohio

The same walk-in conversion the big-box stores sell, installed by the kind of crew they’d send anyway. Written quote first, often from photos, and nothing down until we’ve worked a day.

One choice drives the quote: surround or tile.

The quote · usually same day · from photos

A one-piece surround and a fully tiled walk-in are different jobs, so we quote the bathroom, not a range. Text us three photos and you’ll usually have a written number the same day. Here’s how the quote itself works:

The first payment waits until after our first day on site, the balance until you’ve stood in the new shower and turned it on. Same terms as everything we do.

The question people actually Google: what does the big-box conversion cost?

Fair question. We can answer it better than most, because for years crews like ours did those installs. The big-box price has three layers: the shower unit at retail, the store’s margin on the project, and the crew who shows up at your house. You’re reading the website of layer three.

Hire the crew direct and the middle layer stays in your budget. We’re not going to print another company’s prices here; get their quote, get ours, and set them side by side. Ours is itemized, so you’ll see exactly where every dollar goes. Theirs, you can ask.

Surround or tile. Both done right.

One choice · most of the price

BUILD-A

One-piece surround

Composite walls, new valve and head, glass door or curtain. The workhorse conversion: watertight, easy to clean, done in a couple days, and the quickest way from old tub to new shower.

BUILD-B

Tiled walk-in

Real tile over real waterproofing, any layout, bench and niche if you want them. Costs more because somebody sets every piece by hand, and it’s the version you’ll see in twenty years and still like.

BUILD-SAFE

The safety build

Low or zero threshold, grab bars anchored into blocking, built-in seat, handheld head. For staying in the house you’ve owned for forty years. Looks like a nice shower, not a hospital.

What “days, not weeks” actually means.

A typical conversion · door to door

Day 1

Out with the tub

Demo, haul-out, floor protected, plumbing opened up. The dusty day, and we keep the dust in the bathroom.

Day 2

Pan, walls, valve

Shower base set, walls up, new valve in. This is where a conversion is won or lost, and it’s the part you never see again.

3–4

Finish & first shower

Trim, caulk, glass or rod, cleanup. You turn it on while we’re still there. Tiled builds add a few days for setting and curing.

How much does a tub to shower conversion cost in Wooster, Ohio?

The build drives it: a one-piece surround and a fully tiled shower are different jobs, and custom tile with glass and a bench is a third. So we quote the bathroom, not a range. Text us a few photos and you’ll usually have a written, itemized number the same day, with materials billed at cost and receipts shown. The quote costs nothing.

How much does a big-box store charge for a tub to shower conversion?

The big-box price has three layers in it: the shower unit at retail, the store’s margin on the project, and the local crew who actually does the install. For years, crews like ours were that third layer. Hire the crew directly and the middle layer stays in your budget. Get their quote, then get ours in writing, and compare line by line.

Do I need a permit to convert a bathtub to a shower?

If the drain and valves stay where they are, a straight swap usually doesn’t need one in Wayne County. Move the plumbing and it usually does. Either way it’s our paperwork, not yours: we handle the permit and the inspector ourselves, and we tell you up front if your job needs one.

How long does a tub to shower conversion take?

Most run two to four days: demo and haul-out, then pan, walls and plumbing, then finish work. A custom tiled shower adds a few days for setting and curing. You’ll know the schedule before we start, and you have a working bathroom again the same week.

Can you build the shower for someone who’s unsteady on their feet?

Yes, and it’s a lot of why people call. Low or zero-threshold entry, grab bars anchored into blocking (not drywall anchors), a built-in seat and a handheld head. Done right it looks like a nice shower, not medical equipment, and it’s the difference between staying in the house and not.

The tub, the whole bathroom, and the hallway outside it. That’s usually enough to quote a conversion the same day.
